On the Trail of the Grizzly

May 20, 2009: While enjoying a short break with friends at a cabin in the Canadian Rockies at Kananaskis, Alberta, we came across these fresh grizzly bear tracks in the newly-fallen snow. Judging by the 13cm (5 inch) paw prints, this trail likely belonged to a young griz out chasing a deer. I took the initiative to cross the snow and a mountain stream, then attempted to climb an ice shelf and embankment to see if I could follow the trail. When the ice shelf unexpectedly plunged a few feet into the stream - with me on it - I ended my pursuit but went away satisfied with a nice collection of photos. Great stuff!
